概要  Description

We now know that intercultural communication is not just a skill that must be learned, like riding a bicycle, but it is a particular operation of consciousness that also must be learned. In their natural use of modern language, most human beings operate with a sense of individual or collective self – that is, they exercise self-referential consciousness. But we are not necessarily “meta-conscious” in the sense of perceiving ourselves as agents. If we do not learn to operate at that metalevel, we are not able to consciously choose to change our perspective, modify our behavior, or commit to one among several viable ethical positions. The keynote will present theory and research relevant to this active exercise of intercultural consciousness and review the dilemmas that must be reconciled for that consciousness to develop.
​​Dr. Bennettが講師を務められた2017年3月の関東地区研究会、"Developing Contextual Consciousness: Approaching Intercultural Communication Competence with a Constructivist Paradigm" では、終わりの方で、相対主義の次の段階に触れるお話があり、私たちの生きる現実が集団的な選択により構成されていること、意識を伴ったコミットメントが実際の現実社会を創り出すこと、自覚と責任を持って叶えたい未来やリアリティを志向し選択する主体としての意識を発達させること、等が語られました。参加者から「続きをもっと」というお声をいただいたことがきっかけとなり、本企画が生まれました。

異文化コミュニケーションは、自転車に乗ることのような、単に学習が必要とされるスキルとするには不十分で、同様の学習を必要とした特殊な意識操作であることを私たちはよく知っている。現代語を自然に使うとき、ほとんどの人間は、個人あるいは集合的な自己という感覚で活動しており、それはつまり、自己言及的な意識を行使しているということである。しかし、自分自身を行為主体として認識する意味において、私たちは必ずしも「メタ意識的」状態にあるわけではない。そのメタレベルで稼働することを学ばない限り、私たちは意識的に自身の視点を変えることを選び取ったり、行動を修正したり、実際に採りうる選択可能な倫理的立場のうちのどれかにコミットしたりすることはできない。基調講演では異文化意識の活用に関連した理論や研究を紹介し、この意識を育成する上で調和をはかることが必要とされるジレンマについて概説する。

Milton J. Bennett, Ph.D. is well-known for creating the Developmental Model of Intercultural Communication, first published in 1986 (International Journal of Intercultural Relations) and most recently updated in 2017 (International Encyclopedia of Intercultural Communication). In his career he has applied an educational background in physics, linguistics, and social psychology to understanding and teaching how intercultural communication enables us to become aware of our own cultures and to empathize with others. He is currently Director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute located in Milan, Italy and Washington State, USA, where he is developing new forms of constructivist measurement and applications of intercultural consciousness to exercising leadership in global corporations and to building climates of respect for diversity in multicultural schools and communities.

1986年に出版された異文化感受性発達モデル（DMIS）の考案者として知られている（2017年の最新版はInternational Encyclopedia of Intercultural Communicationに掲載）。物理学・言語学・社会心理学の教育的背景を持ち、異文化コミュニケーションを通して我々がいかに自己覚知し他者に共感できるようになるのか理解し教育することにそれらを生かしてきた。現在はイタリアのミラノとアメリカのワシントン州にあるIntercultural Development Research Instituteの所長として、グローバル企業のリーダーシップ育成、多文化状況の学校やコミュニティでのダイバーシティを尊重する環境構築などに役立つ、異文化間意識の新たな構成主義的測定手法と応用方法を開発している。
鳥飼 玖美子, Ph.D.  立教大学名誉教授

コロンビア大学大学院修士課程修了(MA in TESOL)、サウサンプトン大学大学院人文学研究科博士課程修了 (Ph.D.)。国際会議やテレビにおける同時通訳者を経て大学教員、ラジオ・テレビ英語講師を務める。NHK「世界へ発信 SNS英語術」テレビ講師、NHKオンライン「ニュースで英語術」監修、内閣府政府広報アドバイザー、日本学術会議連携会員、日本通訳翻訳学会名誉会員、国際文化学会顧問、（公益財団法人）中央教育研究所理事、（財団法人）日本開発構想研究所理事、（財団法人）等、幅広い方面にて活動している。近著に『子どもの英語にどう向き合うか』（NHK出版新書、2018）、『英語教育の危機』（ちくま新書、2018）、『話すための英語力』（講談社現代新書、2017）、『英語教育論争から考える』（みすず書房、2014）等がある。
