Dr. Milton J. Bennett is well-known for creating the Developmental Model of Intercultural Communication, first published in 1986 (International Journal of Intercultural Relations) and most recently updated in 2017 (International Encyclopedia of Intercultural Communication). In his career he has applied an educational background in physics, linguistics, and social psychology to understanding and teaching how intercultural communication enables us to become aware of our own cultures and to empathize with others. He is currently Director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute located in Milan, Italy and Washington State, USA, where he is developing new forms of constructivist measurement and applications of intercultural consciousness to exercising leadership in global corporations and to building climates of respect for diversity in multicultural schools and communities.

1986年に出版された異文化感受性発達モデル（DMIS）の考案者として知られている（2017年の最新版はInternational Encyclopedia of Intercultural Communicationに掲載）。物理学・言語学・社会心理学の教育的背景を持ち、異文化コミュニケーションを通して我々がいかに自己覚知し他者に共感できるようになるのか理解し教育することにそれらを生かしてきた。現在はイタリアのミラノとアメリカのワシントン州にあるIntercultural Development Research Instituteの所長として、グローバル企業のリーダーシップ育成、多文化状況の学校やコミュニティでのダイバーシティを尊重する環境構築などに役立つ、異文化意識の新たな構成主義的測定手法と応用方法を開発している。
